Catching You Up: Part 3
By M. C. Oliver
Since May, I have been working on what I called a fanfiction. At first, it was a fanfiction. It was about Clint Barton just like my Many Stories was.
But this all changed one day while I was talking with one of my friends. She was grabbing a few snacks while I chatted about my most recent Work In Progress (WIP). While I spoke, I remembered what Kara Swanson said, “Books are categorized by the age of the main character. If the main character is like 10, 11, 12? That book will be labeled Middle Grade. While my characters for Dust are 19 and 17, they are still young enough to be advertised as Young Adult. Usually young adult characters are, like, fourteen or fifteen. Somewhere around there.”
So if I wanted teenagers, young adults, to read this short story then maybe it would be better to make the characters my age. I know that writing a character of the opposite gender is also kind of tricky so I decided that the main character could be a teenage, twin girl who is the great-granddaughter of Clint Barton.
She could have the power of summer and would be named Summer. Summer can have a twin sister named Crystal who controls winter.
I loved the idea.
At my grandparents’ house, I was talking with my mom about the story. She wants me to publish a short story on a website sometime before the Young Writers conference in August. I decided to write that short story in July.
Almost every time I prayed, I asked God to give me the mental energy for it. And He answered. I finished “Tilgi” on July 15, 2025. It still needs a lot of work but I finished it.
Thank you for reading!
